Smoking Shelters

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

With cigarette smoking being banned in public in most parts of the world, cigarette smokers have a tough time in finding a reclusive space for smoking. That is where the smoking shelters come into picture and offer an ideal alternative space for cigarette smokers.

According to the British smoking ban law, any premises that is ‘substantially enclosed’, meaning 50% of the structure is covered with walls and ceiling can be considered as an ideal place for smokers. So, smoking shelters have been primarily designed keeping in mind this regulation and are excellent options in large companies, hotels, pubs, restaurant and other public places. These smoking shelters provide customers and staff members of a company with a safe, dry and reclusive space to smoke and relax, so that both the parties remain happy and satisfied.

Types of Smoking Shelter
Smoking shelters nowadays, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs. While some of them may have a crystal cover wall and ceiling, some other might have a steel, powder coat, kynar, galvanized or aluminum finish. You can choose the material, like monolithic polycarbonate, acrylic, tiles, wooden shakes, safety glass, architectural aluminum or translucent polycarbonate or any other. While some of the smoking shelters may have a canopy like structure, others might have a bus shelter or garden like structure. You can also choose the roof structure, like for instance, curved, barrel vault, gable, flat, dome, single-slope or others.

Moreover, you also get to choose, whether you wish to have an enclosed smoking shelter, open-air shelter or air-flow shelter type. While enclosed and air-flow smoking shelters are covered all year round, with light and other facilities inside, open-air shelters are ideal for those who wish to have just 2 or 3 walls with a canopy at a lower budget. You also get to choose from a wide variety of colors like black, white or transparent ones.

Some of these smoking shelters also have seating areas attached to them, so that some people can sit and smoke, while others have enough space to stand and chat while smoking. Some of them even have special smoking urns, free-standing ashtray or outdoor ashtrays. These smoking shelters come in various sizes, shapes and patterns and can be customized according to your needs and budget.

Advantages of Smoking Shelters:

Smoking shelters are extremely important in companies and other public places so that non-smokers are not affected by the harmful effects of smoking. Apart from this, these shelters also have a host of advantages like:

• They help in creating a specified area for smokers
• They help in maintaining the air quality in the rooms and ensure that non-smokers have fresh room air for breathing
• These smoking shelters comply with the laws of smoking ban
• These are extremely durable and hence offer long-lasting solutions
• They are fire-resistant and safe areas for smoking
• They help in reducing direct confrontation of smokers with non-smokers, children and aged people.
So, just go ahead and choose your desired smoking shelter, according to your budget and requirement. However, remember to check the regulations and policies once, before setting up a smoking shelter.

Handi Hut

Handi-Hut Inc,  has announced the sale of their 20,000th Smoking Shelter to Miller Brewing Company. Miller Brewing purchased several smoking shelters to be utilized by company employees and executives outside of their corporate offices.

Mel Cohen, CEO of Handi-Hut stated, “We are pleased that Miller Brewing Company sees the benefit to have Handi-Hut’s smoking shelters. This is a win-win solution for all; smoker’s rights, workers rights and company rights. Many employers and business owners are finding that accommodating both the smoker and non-smoker is more than just fair, it’s good business. Workplaces that don’t offer a designated smoking area have reported a substantial loss of productivity. Their entranceways are often crowded with smokers and littered with cigarette butts.”

Handi Hut Inc. provides a practical solution to accommodate smokers so that public spaces can remain smoke-free. The company has been designing and manufacturing glass and aluminum shelters for train stations and bus stop shelters for more than 30 years. The materials used are 20 times more impact resistant than fiberglass and are resistant to hail, wind-blown objects and ultra-violet rays. The huts are quality-engineered and pre-fabricated with all-aluminum and glass. The shelters come in many designs, are built to spec, have vented roofs and are easily installed.

“Hospitals have been especially interested in the more complex-designed huts, since their environment is especially sensitive to cigarette smoke, and employee comfort must include air-conditioned or heated shelters depending on the weather” adds John Cozza, Vice President of Handi-Hut.

In addition to smoking shelters, Handi-Hut also manufactures protective shelters for bus stops, grocery cart areas, car rental returns, passenger shelters for railroads, mall entrances, walkways, staircases, map kiosks and telephone booths. At the George Washington Bridge terminal in New York, Handi-Hut shelters can be seen covering over a quarter mile of waiting bus stops and staircases. . The shelters have been purchased by The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, the New York Daily News, the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. and VA hospitals throughout the country. Handi-Hut also added advertising panels to its manufacturing capability.
